To date there have been 52 reported car thefts, said Greenwich Police Lt. John Slusarz.

"The vast majority of these involved situations where the vehicles were unlocked and the keys were in them," Slusarz said.

In addition, the department has seen an increase in the number of vehicle burglaries with 88 reported incidents so far this year.

"Again, in most cases, the cars were left unlocked and valuables were left in the vehicles," he added.

The department said that with the holiday season approaching, there are steps residents can take to prevent them from becoming a victim including:

  • Always lock your vehicle.
  • Always take the take out of the vehicle.
  • Don't leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.
